Visiting Rome willing to discover something new and more off the beaten track? The Pizza Tour of Rome is the perfect experience for you, for your family, for your friends and for your belly!
Your tour will be centered in and around the Rione Monti district, which is rich in historical monuments and churches and can easily be considered the prettiest, most characteristic and off the beaten track district of town. It is a “hidden” gem bordering the most visited sites of Rome - Piazza Venezia, the Forums and the Colosseum. Follow your guide through this first and most ancient neighborhood of Rome and its little alleys, where you will taste the real Italian pizza styles, accompanied by traditional Italian drinks you probably have never even heard of. Enjoy the neighborhood - which is still frequented by locals by day and popular among the younger Romans by night - and discover some cultural aspects of this area.
Your first stop is at a charming retro style bakery that has been in business for more than one hundred years. Here, you will be introduced to some light pizza and get to know different ways of making Italian pizza.
At the next stop, at a local deli or “gastronomia” as the locals would call it, you’ll be amazed at all the delicious food available. You’ll experience some ingredients that are usually used as topping for the different kinds of pizza (Margherita, Capricciosa, etc). Of course it will be the right time to taste a traditional Italian non-alcoholic drink, the “chinotto.”
Follow your guide to another local “forno” (bakery) to discover further tastes of sliced “pizza alla pala,” i.e. wood fired oven pizza removed with a shovel (“pala”).
The Rione Monti is also world famous for the presence of the Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica, one of the Papal “major basilicas.” Here, you’ll see the tomb of the legendary architect Bernini, among many other stunning aspects.
After this cultural stop, it’ll be time to enjoy a characteristic “aperitivo” Italians like to drink before their lunch/dinner, at a family run shop.
The last stop of your tour will allow you to relax your legs at a final pizzeria, where you’ll see the “pizzaiolo” creating your pizza while you refresh yourself with a local beer, the traditional drink to have with pizza!
