Details

The Forum (a Latin word meaning open space or market place) was the administrative and corporate heart of Rome. Generally this word referred to the open space in any Roman town where business, judicial, civic, or religious activities were conducted. A typical forum might be surrounded by temples, shops, and basilicas (large, covered structures used for various meetings).

It was designed by the architect Vitruvius who felt the proportions needed to be 3:2 (length to width). For centuries, the Roman Forum was the site of the city's most important public buildings including the Arch of Septimius Severus, built in 203 BC. and the Rostra or public speaking platforms.

The Colosseum is the everlasting symbol of the greatness of Rome and stage of the historical fighting of gladiators. The original name for the Colosseo is the Anfiteatrum Flavium. It was built by emperor Vespasiano and inaugurated in 80 AD.

In the ancient world, the elliptical-shaped Colosseum, taking ten years to build, was the largest structure of its type. It stood 160 feet high with four stories of windows, arches, and columns. Each of the three exterior floors consisted of 80 arches. As many as 50,000 spectators with numbered tickets entered through 76 of the entrances on the ground level.

Constantine's Arch was built in 315 AD to commemorate his victory in the battle of Pons Milvius in 312. As the new Roman Emperor, Constantine ended all persecution of Christians. He also moved the capital of from Rome to Constantinople, in Turkey, and thus the Byzantium Empire had begun.
