Overview

The complex of Roman houses on the Caelian hill is formed by the remains of ancient Roman residences - about 20 rooms, 13 of which frescoed - located under the Basilica of San Giovanni e Paolo al Celio. The remains, discovered in the late 19th century, have become a major evidence of stratification over periods as well as uses. Initially part of various popular insulae (apartment buildings), they later were encompassed into a single property, a domus, with frescoed environments, and finally used as the basis for the founding of the upper basilica.
