The basilica of Saint Agnese is built above a labyrinth of underground passages that wind for kilometres that make up the catacomb complex.
The complex was buried 6 metres below street level and the mosaic portrait of the young Roman martyr, Saint Agnese, can be found in the apse of the church. Beside the church of Saint Agnese is the Rotunda of Saint Costanza, named after the daughter of the first Christian Emperor, Constantine. It is completely covered with 4th century mosaics that reflect her status and royal burial. The complex of buildings represents one of the most important but not well known period of Early Christian art.
